Job Description
Under immediate to general supervision, the Lab Tech Assistant performs routine tests on asphalt, emulsions, and other construction materials following established procedures.
Primary Duties
- Perform AASHTO, ASTM, AZDOT, or other State Agency tests on construction materials
- Receive, inventory, and prepare samples for testing
- Record test results accurately
- Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and supplies
- Assist with general lab cleaning and organization
- Conduct simple math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Use laboratory equipment such as balances, ovens, glassware, hot plates, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Material sampling and testing procedures
- Inspection techniques
- Occupational safety hazards and proper PPE
- Common laboratory equipment and terminology
Ability to:
- Set up and solve basic equations
- Perform repetitive tasks with accuracy
- Multitask and work independently
- Handle interruptions and shifting priorities
- Record data clearly and consistently
Skills in:
- Operating and assembling testing equipment
- Using laboratory tools and instruments
- Mechanical aptitude
- Strong organizational and detail-oriented work
- Clear verbal and written communication
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
Minimum:
- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
- Associate degree or 2 years of laboratory experience in asphalt testing
Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- May require overnight travel
- Resume submission required
- Ability to work safely and follow all procedures
