The Laboratory Technician performs accurate and timely testing of routine and non-routine lab samples in accordance with appropriate laboratory and safety guidelines, ensuring that results and samples obtained meet internal and external customer requirements. All work to be conducted following SOP’s to meet objectives established in PPL’s.

The Laboratory Technician will also participate in laboratory investigations, equipment evaluations and qualifications, and quality improvement initiatives. The role includes assisting in the preparation and maintenance of SOP’s, setting up analytical equipment, performing equipment maintenance and calibration and safeguarding all samples and processing records.

Primary responsibilities and accountabilities of the job:
Sample Analysis and Reporting
• Can successfully perform all technical procedures within area of responsibility
• Has knowledgeable and is proficient at the use of laboratory data management systems, maintaining logbooks and test records up to date
• Document reviewer for some laboratory procedures or equipment
• Trainer/mentor for other operators in departmental operations
• Understands others’ priorities and reprioritizes own work when appropriate
• Systematically approaches troubleshooting and can assist with the resolution of most complex problems
• Generates lab reports as requested
• Support maintenance, modifications, improvements, troubleshooting and repairs of equipment

Continuous Improvement Initiatives
• Challenges status quo and suggests alternative solutions in a positive manner
• Works with technical support personnel to suggest, implement, and communicate improvements to written methods, procedures, or practices

• Proactively communicates with internal customers and provides them with necessary support

Job Requirements

Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift 50 lbs without assistance on a routine basis
• Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Ability to climb stairs
• Ability to be a fork lift operator if needed

Working Conditions
• May require working overtime if needed
• Will handle and process a variety of chemicals and polymers, including high temperature polymers, following MSDS's and instructions. Operations include weighing, mixing, drying, etc.

Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills
• Associate Degree in Chemistry, Chemical or Material Engineering, Polymer processing or equivalent experience
• Five years of Polymer related testing experience
• Experience in High Temperature Polymers
• Good mechanical skills
• Demonstrated ability to follow standard operating procedures

• Demonstrated ability in method development
• Ability to interpret and evaluate testing procedures and solve problems
• Computer literate in spreadsheet, Power Point and Word processing. SAP is a plus
• Strong organizational and communication skills
